The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), through the General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER), concluded the National Forum “Perspectives, Challenges, and Opportunities for Rural Development” with a very positive balance. The forum, held on May 6th and 7th, served as a technical space that allowed for the collection of important contributions for the update of the National Rural Electrification Plan (PNER).

During the workshops, representatives from the public and private sectors, specialists, academics, and stakeholders linked to rural energy development shared experiences, proposals, and recommendations aimed at strengthening the medium-term component of the PNER, under a participatory, modern approach that is articulated with the needs of the country's rural populations.

The event allowed for addressing strategic topics related to closing gaps in access to electrical service, including new technologies for rural electrification, digital systems for the formulation of the National Rural Electrification Plan (PNER), the scope and challenges of distributed generation, as well as the impact of modifications to the Rural Electrification Regulations.

Furthermore, exhibitions were developed on models and strategies for closing gaps, integrating productive loads into the PNER, rural electricity system tariffs, and proposals and initiatives aimed at strengthening the planning and implementation of rural electrification projects for the benefit of the country's most remote localities.

Jimler Paredes, the Director General of Rural Electrification at MINEM, highlighted the broad participation and commitment of the various stakeholders involved in rural energy development. He detailed that the experiences, proposals, and technical reflections shared will significantly contribute to the strengthening of rural electrification in the country and to the updating of the National Rural Electrification Plan 2024-2033.

He explained that, through the Directorate of Planning and Investment Evaluation of the DGER, the MINEM has been promoting the update of the Medium-Term Component of the PNER, a key instrument for guiding investments aimed at expanding access to electricity service in rural areas, isolated localities, and border regions.

Paredes specified that the contributions gathered during the discussion will be evaluated and incorporated into the process of updating the Medium-Term Component of the PNER 2024-2033, which is scheduled to come into effect in 2027, allowing for more efficient, modern, and coordinated planning with the real needs of the population.

Finally, he reaffirmed MINEM's commitment to continue promoting policies and projects aimed at closing gaps and improving the quality of life of thousands of Peruvian families through access to electricity.
