Minsur receives approval to upgrade its smelter in Pisco with an investment of US$5.5 million

Minsur, a company of the Breca group, has received approval from the National Service of Environmental Certification for Sustainable Investments (Senace) to carry out significant improvements at its tin smelting and refining plant in Pisco, located south of Lima. The approval corresponds to the eighth Supporting Technical Report (ITS), which proposes various modifications and additions to the plant with the aim of optimizing operational processes and improving environmental performance.

Among the main modifications approved, the change from a pelletizing process to a briquetting process stands out, which will allow for the reduction of fine material generation and improvement of the dust collection system's performance. Modifications to the Diesel storage system are also considered, in order to guarantee a backup supply in case of possible natural gas supply interruptions.

In terms of infrastructure, new warehouses will be built for supplies and materials such as scrap metal, wood, end-of-life tires, and other key components. Additionally, spaces will be created for special projects and maintenance tasks, which will contribute to improving plant operations.

A fundamental aspect of this project is staff training, with the creation of specialized rooms for warehouse workers and transporters. These rooms will focus on safety, environment, and ergonomics, thus ensuring comprehensive training for the staff. New spaces will also be installed, such as parking for heavy vehicles and a modern workshop for the maintenance of large equipment.

Regarding environmental improvements, Minsur will implement tanks for the storage of wastewater, which will be reused for irrigation of green areas and forestry plantations, contributing to sustainable resource management. Likewise, the maintenance workshop offices will be expanded and the area for size reduction of iron dross will be relocated, improving the operability of heavy machinery.

The project also includes the installation of a new plant for refined tin spraying and the incorporation of two new cells in the smelting Bag House, which will optimize the capture of particles and gases, reinforcing Minsur's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

The total investment for these improvements amounts to approximately US$55 million, and according to Senace, the proposed changes will not have any negative environmental impacts. Environmental management measures are already included in the previously approved management plans.

With this approval, Minsur reaffirms its commitment to innovation, continuous improvement in its processes, and sustainable development, contributing to the optimization of the Pisco plant and the well-being of nearby communities.
