MINEM promotes more energy infrastructure with 32 transmission projects in 20 regions
The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) reported that it is promoting the implementation of 32 electricity transmission projects nationwide, representing a total investment of US$2.109 billion, which will strengthen the reliability of the power grid and ensure energy supply for the benefit of millions of Peruvians.
These initiatives comprise 30 transmission line and substation projects and 2 expansions of the existing system (REP), totaling more than 3,800 kilometers of electrical grids with voltages ranging from 60 kV to 500 kV. The projects are being developed in 20 regions of the country, contributing to closing energy infrastructure gaps.
The General Directorate of Electricity (DGE) of the MINEM detailed that, of the total mentioned, 26 projects are in the studies stage and 6 are in the construction phase, evidencing the sustained progress of the investment portfolio in the Electricity subsector.
Among the most relevant construction projects are: the 220 kV Machupicchu – Quencoro – Onocora – Tintaya (Cusco) Transmission Line, which will strengthen the electricity supply in the south of the country; and the 500 kV Nueva Yanango – Nueva Huánuco Link, which will benefit the regions of Junín, Pasco, and Huánuco.
In addition, the major projects currently in the planning stage are: the 500-kV Nueva Huánuco–Tocache–Celendín–Trujillo transmission line; the 500 kV Celendín–Piura Interconnection project; and the 500 kV Piura–Nueva Frontera Transmission Line project, which will enable the electrical interconnection between Peru and Ecuador with a proposed investment of US$1.07 billion.
These projects will allow for an increase in the transmission capacity of the national electrical system, reduce interruption risks, and meet the growth in electricity demand in different regions.
The Director General of Electricity of MINEM, Adrián Zapata, highlighted that these initiatives are key to the country's energy development. “We are executing a historic portfolio of transmission projects, which will ensure a more secure, efficient, and continuous electricity supply, especially in regions where infrastructure gaps still exist,” he stated.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) points out that strengthening the transmission network is fundamental to accompanying economic growth, integrating new generation sources, and ensuring that energy reaches homes, industries, and businesses across the country with quality.
