The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), through the General Directorate of Environmental Affairs of Hydrocarbons (DGAAH), announced the upcoming commencement of the «Project for the Permanent Abandonment of 34 High-Risk Wells,» located in the province of Talara (Piura).

This initiative marks a milestone by being the first direct state intervention aimed at remediating environmental liabilities generated by hydrocarbon activities.

After a selection process, the contract with the Consorcio Alum & Perutractor for the remediation of liabilities was signed on April 9. The service will be carried out between April 2026 and February 2027.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) detailed that the intervention will focus on 33 wells located in the district of La Brea and one in the district of Lobitos, both in the province of Talara.

Once this work is completed, MINEM will have addressed 21% of the total number of high-risk wells identified nationwide, benefiting more than 14,000 residents in the aforementioned districts.

This project will not only allow for the control of health and environmental quality risks, but it will also allow for the recovery of land value for the community, reaffirming the State's commitment to the remediation of hydrocarbon environmental liabilities for the benefit of the population.

The head of the DGAAH, Efraín Soto, highlighted the importance of signing this contract, as “it constitutes the first step to remedy the liabilities caused by wells that have been unsealed for many years. This process, which we are undertaking as MINEM, will benefit the population and the environment,” he stated.
