The deficit in hospital infrastructure continues to be one of the main challenges for the healthcare system in Peru, especially in regions outside of Lima. In recent years, various projects driven by the State with the support of the private sector have sought to improve medical care capacity in different areas of the country, with the goal of bringing specialized services closer to thousands of people.

In that context, the Huarmey Hospital, in the Áncash region, is currently undergoing its process of acceptance and conformity of works. The project, financed by the mining company Antamina through the Works for Taxes mechanism on behalf of the Ministry of Health, will benefit approximately 33,000 inhabitants of the province. The new hospital infrastructure, category II-E, will allow for expanded coverage and improved quality of medical services available in the area.

“The development of hospital infrastructure in regions is fundamental to strengthening the healthcare system's capacity and reducing historical gaps. This type of project allows specialized medical services to be brought closer to communities that have had limited access to this type of care for years,” he/she/they stated. Felipe Arteaga, Project Manager at COSAPI, company responsible for the engineering, construction, and equipping of the hospital.

The facility will have 33 inpatient beds and an infrastructure of 11,027 square meters. Among the services it will offer are emergency, hospitalization, outpatient care, internal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, general surgery, pediatrics, and tuberculosis care, in addition to essential obstetric and neonatal services.

In this context, Huarmey Hospital is projected to be the first smart hospital in the Áncash region, by integrating digital solutions and advanced management systems that optimize both operations and patient care. This technological incorporation equips it with other modern hospitals in the country, by allowing real-time monitoring of its facilities, improving the efficiency of clinical processes, and reinforcing safety standards.

Likewise, another of the major projects executed is the Llata Hospital, located in the Huamalíes province, Huánuco region, at over 3,400 meters above sea level. This health center, also funded by Antamina through Oxygen, was executed by COSAPI and received by the Ministry of Health in October 2024, currently benefiting over 50,000 inhabitants. The construction of this Category II-E hospital has six floors on a hillside, 31 hospital beds, and a covered area of 10,947 square meters.

Hospital infrastructure to strengthen healthcare in regions

Projects like the Huarmey and Llata hospitals are part of the efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure outside of Lima and contribute to closing historical gaps in access to specialized medical services, particularly in provinces where hospital services have been limited for years.
