Cusco: Natural gas expansion reaches 80% and will serve 1,000 households in San Jerónimo

The expansion of natural gas infrastructure in Cusco has reached 80% completion in the district of San Jerónimo, where the installation of approximately 25 kilometers of pipelines will provide 1,000 families with access to more affordable energy.

According to the Regional Management of Energy, Mines and Hydrocarbons of Cusco, work on trunk and primary networks is in its final stage. The Regional Government expects the first household connections to be completed before the Cusco Festivities.

The regional sector manager, Merciano Basilio Peláez, indicated that the objective is to expand the project's reach to 4,000 homes, subject to technical and administrative conditions.

With the arrival of natural gas, it is estimated that the households that benefit will be able to reduce their energy costs by up to 50%, which will have a direct impact on their household budgets.

Residents of the area highlighted the progress of the project, which has been anticipated for over two decades, as a key step towards improving their quality of life.

Next steps

The Regional Government will request the Social Energy Inclusion Fund (FISE) to reactivate the Gas Bonus program, in order to accelerate household connections.

Additionally, the installation of a second tank at the San Jerónimo plant is being evaluated to increase supply capacity, as well as the possible expansion of networks beyond the initial 25 kilometers.

Service expansion

The expansion of natural gas in the region seeks to improve the living conditions of the population through access to cleaner, safer, and more economical energy, reducing dependence on fuels such as LPG or firewood.

The model could be replicated in other provinces and districts of Cusco, with investments exceeding S/ 20 million, complemented by solutions such as the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in areas without access to pipelines.
