MINEM is promoting nine major solar energy projects worth over US$1.268 billion to strengthen the country's renewable energy generation

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) reported that Peru has nine solar photovoltaic generation projects under development, scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2028, representing a total investment of US$1.268 billion and a combined installed capacity of 1,420 megawatts (MW), which will be added to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN).

These projects will strengthen the supply of clean and reliable electric energy, contributing to the diversification of the national energy matrix and the reduction of polluting emissions in our country.

Among the most significant projects is the Illa Solar Power Plant, located in the Arequipa region, which is currently under construction. With an installed capacity of 396 MW and an investment of US$341.9 million, it will become one of the largest solar power plants in the country.

In that region, projects such as Sunny (second phase), with 105 MW, and the San José Solar Plant, which will contribute an additional 155.7 MW to the national electricity system, are also advancing.

In the Moquegua region, MINEM’s portfolio includes large-scale initiatives in the study phase, such as Solimana (250 MW) and Hanaqpampa (140.8 MW), as well as the Lupi project (181.2 MW) and the Intipampa Expansion, the latter with progress exceeding 80% and a capacity of 51.7 MW. Likewise, significant projects such as the CERW Wayra Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant in Ica (94.22 MW) are being considered.

The Deputy Minister of Electricity of MINEM, Francisco Mendoza, highlighted the strategic importance of this type of generation, as it plays a fundamental role in the country's energy transition process.

“Peru has exceptional natural conditions, such as high levels of solar radiation in various regions, which allow us to develop competitive and sustainable solar projects,” he stated.

He also highlighted that promoting renewable energy generation drives economic and regional development, because these investments not only increase electricity generation capacity but also create jobs, boost local economies, and strengthen the country's energy security, benefiting all Peruvians.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines thus reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting investments in non-conventional renewable energies, in line with Peru's environmental sustainability, competitiveness, and economic growth objectives, contributing to closing energy access gaps for the country's less-favored sectors.
