The era of electric vehicles opens a unique window for Peruvian mining, claims Abraham Chahuan
The accelerated expansion of technologies such as electric vehicles, mobile devices, and artificial intelligence is driving a growing global demand for minerals, a scenario that opens up a strategic opportunity for countries with abundant geological resources like Peru. This was stated by Abraham Chahuan, President of the World Mining Congress 2026, during a webinar organized with Semana Económica.
During his speech, he highlighted that minerals have become an essential component of daily life and the energy transition process the world is undergoing.
«A cell phone has more than 10 metals inside. So, we are faced with a real situation in which the industry will be pushed because the demand is there. And the demand is related to daily use, daily consumption, and satisfaction,» he stated.
Chahuan explained that the sustained growth of the electric vehicle market is one of the main drivers of this transformation. He indicated that technological evolution is allowing for greater battery range and efficiency. “Initially, electric vehicles had a range of 100 kilometers, and now they have a range of 400 or 500 kilometers. And battery charging is becoming faster and faster,» he stated.
In that context, he pointed out that Peru and other countries in the region have a competitive advantage that is difficult to replicate due to their geological wealth. “We have a tremendous competitive advantage, which is having the geological resources that would allow us to meet that demand,» he stated.
Competitiveness to seize the opportunity
The executive warned that one of the main challenges in converting this potential into economic development is the need for more efficient processes. «The State must also be a participant in this, reducing times without lowering quality or requirements,» he noted.
He also emphasized that attracting investments requires clear rules and legal stability. «Nobody is going to invest in any industry if you change the rules of the game, be it after one year or two,» he stated.
The president of the WMC 2026 He announced that the event will bring together business leaders, authorities, specialists, and representatives from academia to debate the main challenges and opportunities in global mining. Among the central topics will be the future demand for critical minerals, the competitiveness of producing countries, artificial intelligence applied to mineral exploration, and new technologies that are transforming the industry.
The World Mining Congress 2026 will be held from June 24-26, 2026, in Lima and will bring together global mining industry leaders, government authorities, investors, academics, and innovation specialists.
