With the aim of continuing to promote female talent from the formative stages, Women in Mining Peru celebrated the outstanding participation of four of its student associates in the 16th Symposium – International Mining Meeting, one of the most important events in the global sector, recently organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE).

Thanks to a scholarship program granted by the SNMPE, these future leaders—belonging to the careers of Environmental, Metallurgical, and Mining Engineering, and coming from the strategic regions of Lima, Pasco, and Junín— had direct access to the main global mining discussions, trends, and technologies.

«Seeing future engineers from diverse regions interacting with world leaders demonstrates the great potential of young talent. From the Board of Directors of WIM PERU, we reaffirm our commitment to continue articulating opportunities that connect academia with the highest level of mining practice,» stated Miluska Cervantes, first vice president of WIM Peru.

«We are proud to celebrate the participation of four of our student associates in this prestigious symposium. This experience shows that when guilds and institutions join forces, we create real, decentralized, and transformative opportunities for future generations,» said Mirtha Rodríguez, second vice president of WIM Peru, an organization that currently has a presence in 15 regions of the country.

Top-tier mentorship and global vision

In addition to attending high-level technical talks, the international meeting opened doors for female students to participate in exclusive sessions on mentoring with top executives in the sector in the country, such as Diego Ortega Anglo American, Walter Sciutto (Pluz Energy) and Jessica Vasquez (Minsur). Likewise, the associates had the privilege of benefiting from the strategic vision of world-class leaders, such as the renowned international economist Dambisa Moyo and the president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR), Julio Velarde.

With the firm purpose of promoting greater female participation in the sector, WIM Peru manages valuable strategic alliances to offer exclusive benefits to its community.

A prime example of this was the outstanding participation of the Embassy of Australia in this event, a venue where the great interest in study opportunities through the scholarship was highlighted. «Women for Sustainable Mining», released in April of this year. Under this international cooperation, WIM Peru is in charge of the program's administration, assuming responsibility for both the rigorous national call for applications process and the comprehensive development of the entire initiative.

Through these access and training programs, WIM PERU contributes to reducing the gender gap in the mining sector. The general profile of its associates is extremely broad and diverse, integrating students and professionals from all technical and university careers—from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines to areas of humanities, literature, and social sciences—recognizing that modern mining involves and impacts all disciplines.
