In the framework of World Environment Day, Las Bambas presents environmental solutions applied to its mining operation, which combine technological innovation, circular economy, and local knowledge in Apurímac, addressing two specific operational challenges: reducing the use of fossil fuels in remote areas and valuing organic waste to generate new productive inputs.

At the Tailings Dam Stage 6, Las Bambas implemented autonomous solar systems to supply power to the Concrete Plant and the Crushing Plant, located in areas far from the conventional electricity grid. This solution allows the replacement of diesel generators with high-efficiency solar equipment and storage batteries, ensuring power for field operations and reducing fossil fuel consumption.

With a reported investment of S/ 44,426, the system ensures continuous electrical supply for operational containers and auxiliary infrastructure, and contributes to decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, noise, exposure to combustion gases, and the logistical risks associated with hydrocarbon supply. The solution helps reduce 0.126 tons of CO2 per month per work front.

Complementarily, Las Bambas is promoting a circular economy initiative that revalues organic waste from the Antawasi camp through the “Tomoco” composting plant. The compost was applied to a pilot plot of 300 m² configured in terracing, where the cultivation of native potato without chemical fertilizers was validated.

The project records a monthly production of between 1.5 and 2.0 tons of compost and achieved a yield of 3 kg of native potato per square meter. Additionally, it incorporates the participation of workers from the Nueva Fuerabamba Peasant Community, who contributed traditional agricultural knowledge for crop management and the recovery of sustainable practices adapted to the high Andean environment.

“At Las Bambas, we understand that sustainability must be expressed in concrete, measurable, and replicable actions. These projects show that it is possible to incorporate environmental solutions at different levels of operation: from the use of solar energy in remote sites to the valorization of organic waste to generate compost and strengthen local agricultural practices,” said Giovanna Huaney, Las Bambas Environmental and Permitting Manager.

On World Environment Day, Las Bambas reaffirms the importance of promoting projects that integrate innovation, environmental management, and local participation as part of a vision for sustainability applied to mining operations.
