Global LPG Day: Peru Consolidates Among Latin America's Leading Markets
On World Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Day, Peru highlights the role of this fuel in the daily lives of millions of Peruvian families and in the development of various economic activities. Its importance in the country is also reflected regionally: between 2016 and 2023, Peru ranked as the third-largest consumer of LPG in Latin America, surpassed only by Mexico and Brazil, according to the “Economic Study on Informality in the Marketing of Bottled Liquefied Petroleum Gas,” prepared by GĚRENS with information from The Global Economy.
During that period, Peruvian demand for LPG recorded cumulative growth of 23,491 TP3T, one of the strongest performances in the region. This trend allowed the country to surpass historically significant economies such as Argentina and confirms the growing presence of this resource in households, businesses, and productive activities.
“In Peru, LPG plays an essential role in energy security and the quality of life for families. Its growth in recent years confirms that it remains an efficient, versatile, and accessible alternative for millions of homes. On this World LPG Day, it is important to recognize the progress achieved, but also to continue working to expand its access in a safe, formal, and sustainable way, stated Ignacio Schneider, General Manager of Limagas.
Faced with this scenario, the sector faces the challenge of continuing to strengthen storage and distribution infrastructure, expanding the reach of the FISE Voucher Program, and promoting greater collaboration between the public and private sectors. These measures are key to consolidating a more efficient, secure, and accessible market for the population.
The study also identifies important advances in Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia, driven mainly by urbanization processes and the transition to more efficient energy sources such as LPG. However, in the Peruvian case, there are still development opportunities in rural areas and remote locations, where energy coverage remains limited.
In that context, World LPG Day represents an opportunity to highlight the contribution of this energy source to the country's energy matrix and to the daily lives of millions of Peruvians. For Limagas, moving towards a more orderly, modern, and reliable market will be fundamental to meeting growing demand and contributing to the well-being of more families throughout the national territory.
