GeoExplora 2026, a mining geological exploration event in Peru, held its launch in Cusco.

Formal mining is the most important economic activity in the Cusco region, accounting for 40% of the regional GDP. It also accounts for 11,000 jobs and more than 3.57 billion soles in royalties and fees over the past five years. Furthermore, copper is one of the region’s most important minerals.

This was pointed out by Eng. Roque Benavides Ganoza, President of the Organizing Committee of GeoExplora 2026, during the presentation in Cusco of the event organized by the Geological Engineering Chapter of the Departmental Council of Lima of the College of Engineers of Peru.

Benavides announced that GeoExplora will be held on October 5, 6, and 7, 2026, at the Vida Wasi Convention Center, located in the Urubamba Valley. This event will bring together authorities, businessmen, and professionals to address the importance of geological and mining-energy exploration in Peru.

Geology and technology, key to new energy projects

“GeoExplora is born with a clear purpose: to connect knowledge, innovation, investment, and sustainable development, by bringing together science, business, the state, and academia to drive the future of geological exploration in Peru and Latin America,” he indicated.

He maintained that the world is undergoing a major transformation driven by the energy transition, technological innovation, and the growing demand for critical minerals for clean energy and new technologies.

“In that scenario, geological exploration becomes the starting point for all responsible development,” he pointed out.

He explained that exploration constitutes a fundamental stage for understanding the country's natural resources and their economic potential. “It is the investigation of the earth's interior, and that is done with a lot of technology, and it contributes greatly to the economy,” he noted.

For Benavides, holding this meeting in the Sacred Valley reminds us that Peru is a country where history, culture, tourism, and sustainable development can go hand in hand. Here, in a land that was the center of one of the most admired civilizations in the

world, we want to reflect on how to responsibly harness our natural resources to build a future of opportunities for all.

Furthermore, the event will take place within the VidaWasi environment, an initiative that reflects the

social commitment to promote health and well-being for the children and families of this region. In this way, knowledge and investment are also connected with a human and sustainable purpose.

Institutional commitment

The College of Engineers of Peru – Lima Departmental Council, held the first part of its institutional meeting together with the College of Engineers of Peru – Cusco Departmental Council, with the signing of the Interinstitutional Agreement, an act that will strengthen joint work, academic cooperation, and the development of new initiatives.

The ceremony was led by the Dean of CIP Cusco, Engineer Víctor López Durand, and the Dean of CIP CD Lima, Engineer Edwin Chávarri Carahuatay, who signed the inter-institutional agreement that will strengthen the joint work between both departmental councils.

Additionally, during the ceremony, the incorporation of the College of Engineers of Peru – Cusco Departmental Council into the GeoExplora Honorary Committee was announced, reaffirming the institutional commitment to promoting initiatives that encourage research, innovation, and sustainable development.
