MEF: Illegal mining accounts for approximately 2.71% of GDP

 

He indicated that the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) of the government is part of the intervention of the unified command that the Armed Forces and the Police have in Pataz and also carries out control activities in other areas where there is mining activity, both in extraction and commercialization.

 

He reported that so far this year, 70,801 interventions have been carried out on the transport of minerals and chemical inputs, removing one million 274,000 tons of chemical inputs and 10,555 tons of raw material containing minerals.

 

He also pointed out that between January and June of this year, 143 processing plants have been audited.

 

On the other hand, he explained that to guarantee traceability, what is being done is supplementing the customs export declaration with data on the mineral origin concession and the processing plant.

 

“Because what has been detected is that there is a significant difference between the production estimates of formal mining and what Peru is exporting in a significant volume, of almost 46 tons,” he said.

 

 “So the value of this is approximately around $3.5 billion, and we want to ensure traceability to guarantee that the product being exported has complete traceability,” he added.

 

“In addition to improving formality so that what we are not detecting, and which we estimate is a significant component, is calculated at around an additional $4.5 billion, it also passes through the formal channel and is formally exported,” he indicated.

 

“Then, this is consistent with the figures they mention, which we have here at Sunat, that illegal mining represents around 2.7 points of GDP,” he specified.

 

Finally, he said that Sunat conducts orientation and assistance campaigns so that informal miners can also register, not only in the mining formalization process, but also for the tax and customs formalization process.
