MINEM informed Pasco students about the benefits of mining for the country's development.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) developed the XXXIII Mining Integration and Sustainable Development Workshop with the participation of more than 100 students and graduates from the National University Daniel Alcides Carrión (UNDAC), located in the “Mining Capital of Peru,” Cerro de Pasco, in the Pasco region.

“The purpose of the workshop is to improve and strengthen knowledge about mining activities and the significant economic impacts they generate through mining canon, royalties, duration and penalty rights, and their contribution to the local and national economy,” said Mayra Figueroa, Director of Sustainability and Mining Articulation of MINEM, responsible for organizing this event together with DREMH Pasco.

The auditorium of the Faculty of Economic and Accounting Sciences of UNDAC became the center for theoretical training on Peru's geological wealth, the sustainable development of mining, mining concessions, and the geoscientific role of INGEMMET; in addition to mining legislation and opportunities for innovation in the mining sector.

The workshop also included a field trip to one of the country's oldest mines owned by Minera Volcan, located in the districts of Simón Bolívar, Chaupimarca, and Yanacancha, at an altitude of 4,300 meters above sea level.

Representatives of Volcan explained that the Paragsha mine is an underground mining operation that extracts polymetallic minerals such as copper, lead, zinc, and silver, and is part of the Cerro de Pasco Mining Unit, which includes an open-pit mine and two concentrator plants, Paragsha and San Expedito.

After the visit, the students and alumni, Carlos Espinoza, Mariana Rojas, Ronaldinho Chávez, Fiorella Reyes, and Estefanía Rojas, agreed in describing their participation in this workshop as “very fruitful,” as it will allow them to contribute to combating the misinformation that the community has regarding mining activities.

Civil associations like Amautas Mineros praised the event's development for spreading good practices in mining activities that generate sustainable development. Likewise, Women in Mining – WIM Peru highlighted the participation of women in the Peruvian mining sector.

It should be noted that Juan Rojas Quispe, dean of the College of Engineers of Peru – Departmental Council of Pasco, Jeaneth Huamán Martel, director of DREMH Pasco, and Pedro Arias Coronel, representative of the regional management of Economic Development of the Regional Government of Pasco, attended the workshop inauguration.
